Art of the Factory Records family - The Hacienda, Peter Saville, Joy Division, New Order

The beginning of it all: The poster for Factory 1 designed by Peter Saville.

Poster for the second birthday of The Hacienda, (Factory 51), found here.

This is Peter Saville's iconic design for Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures album, which has been adapted to everything imaginable these days, from tee shirts to lunch boxes.

Flyer for a New Order show in 1983, Designed by Lawrence Weiner.
Its design is so uniquely dated, reminding me of book covers designed around the same era.

Zeroxed, Bold, Clear & Demanding Attention:
A lot of aspiring clubs or musicians often face the lack of adequate funds or equipment to promote themselves and their gigs.  But all the way in the 70's Factory Records not only promoted the hell out of their clubs and artists, but did it using very simple designs on black & white printing.  No fancy illustrations, no acid-free paper, and ink with no color.  But they made it work and it spread the word.  Let this be an inspiration to any artist or musician only armed with a black cartridge and a desktop printer, or even access to a photocopier.

A landmark on the music industry from club flyers to record sleeves:

This is a very interesting project about relating color to music.

The Complete Graphic History
So if you liked the art you've seen here I highly recommend this book, "Factory Records:  The Complete Graphic Album."  It's a comprehensive collection of the prints, sleeves, posters, flyers and other designs for the label, definitely on my book list.
