Vintage German Ads by Ludwig Hohlwein

Ludwig Hohlwein (1874-1949) was a commercial German poster artist with an architectural background who had an affinity for watercolors, tempera painting, and poster prints. He creates some really rich compositions & shadings and had produced over 3,000 advertisements ranging from pre-World War II posters to American advertisements for Camel and Fatima Cigarettes.

Alison Haigh is a designer working out of London at Proud creative, a graduate of the University of Brighton, and was selected by Peter Saville for the 2010 Grafik Design Awards. Her "Launderette" poster series at the beginning of this post is a favorite, and is available for purchase here at Print Process. They are beautiful silk-screened prints that use photographs taken during the wash cycle of a laundry machine.

Came across some vintage James Bond book covers by Pan Books done by Raymond Hawkey that look relatively simple but hold an appealing style with the use of slabbing thick weighted sans serif contrasted with a thinner weight against some nice illustration. Better than some of the book covers I see these days, that's for sure.

I can't even count how many times I've gone to this wonderful archive of the 1972 Olympics in Munich, featuring the print design work of Otl Aicher. If I could, I would live in that year and that palette of Otl Aicher; it just works so well: it's attention getting, its clean, its vibrant, and its not tacky. Visit 1972municholympics.co.uk for much more, and don't be startled by the "price list." You can get vintage matchbooks for £3 or postcards for £5. Pretty reasonable prices for genuine vintage olympic designs by the legendary Mr. Aicher.

Six Architects by Andrea Gallo

Italian graphic designer Andrea Gallo created this set of posters depicting 6 great architects through minimalist styling in black and white.

An example of Louis Kahn's work-- the Salk Institute of for Biological Studies in La Jolla, CA.

Ludwig Mies can der Rohe was another modern German architect, with S.R Crown Hall of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Illinois, Chicago being his best work.

Bauhaus school founder and then modern German architect Walter Gropius invented this style of door handle, notably named the Gropius door handle.

Avar Aalto was a Finnish architect and designer who went on to start the Finnish furniture company Artek, along with creating this chair he called the "Paimio Chair" that comes with hefty price of $3,950 for any of you designers out there that appreciate chairs.

I've never written a post with such trembling hands as I am for Theory11's playing cards – the design and print work is so gorgeous, and has such a classic mark of fine craftsmanship brought back in a modern way that one can't help but buy a few decks (which are very reasonably priced by the way). The boxes are intricately designed and manufactured with a rich level of texture and detail, not only from the graphic design side, but also with accents of debossing and gold foil, like on the Monarch set. For less than six bucks you can pick up one of these beautiful decks, such as the Steampunk, the JAQK, or the classic reissue of the Bee Titanium Edition. Literally a perfect belated Christmas present for the graphic designer you know.

Morgan Blair is an artist and designer based in Brooklyn, New York who has a taste for organic acrylic style painting and abstract geometric patterns. Looking at these really stimulates the bright neon side of my brain, and what I like most probably about her design style is the pattern manupulation.

Graphic Design of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games by Ben Hulse

This is some gorgeous graphic work for last year's Olympics by Ben Hulse, Vancouver-based designer, photographer and musician. It must be quite a feeling for a designer to see their work adorning the huge stadiums and courses for one of the most prestigious international events in the world, from pencils to airplanes. But with a project of this magnitude, it undoubtedly comes with a lot of work, with development for the design work starting three years prior. In all fairness however, Ben Hulse notes on his website that the credit for this huge body of work comes from a talented team:

"The Look of the Games graphic elements were created by the 2010 design team (Mélanie Kimmett, Jason Esteban, Ben Hulse, Karen Clark, Jackie Boucher, Chloé Douglas, Shawn Parkinson) and were reinterpreted for the posters. Concept, design, stencilling, compositing and photography by Ben Hulse. Art direction by Leo Obstbaum."

You might look at some of the fantastic lettering and type work above and say to yourself, "Wow, whoever did this up must be a really talented, hard-working individual who's no ordinary human being." And, you'd be right, because Micheal Deal is a Seattle-bred man raised by wild orcas. If that wasn't enough street cred, he currently operates as a designer at Google Creative Lab and is an alumni of Pentagram in New York. Not sure if he was involved with the Google Chrome Fastball project, but it's cool enough to feature here either way.

Fredrik Söderberg is an artist from Stockholm, Sweden who can get really expressive through elaborate watercolor paintings. He draws much of his inspiration for his work from meditation and religious experiences, and claims that he likes for his work to be esoteric in its interpretation to the viewer. I for one am going to have to agree that his paintings evoke surreal perspectives in a way that draws you in the more you look at it.

Bruce Bingham sent us a submission a while back saying how he loves the blog and draws inspiration from it as a graphic designer himself. What I thought was interesting was that Bruce designs to express his ideas and feelings, more specifically his Islamic beliefs growing up as an American. He calls his work Westernized Islamic pop art, and shares his experiences of his life and posts his design work for critique.

Massachusetts & Connecticut Police Patches

Thought these would make for a different but interesting post. Usually when we see cops we see their face inside of a Crown Victoria, or we see them in the media on tv, the news, and not so flattering photos of them standing up to protesters. That said, some of these patches aren't half bad. The shield shape combined with bold type and solid government emblem work evoke a strong feeling of uniform power somehow, with my favorites being the ones with the diagonal "police" slashes.

You might have seen the designer Mac error popup spoof by Juan Carlos Pagan floating around the internet lately, and while it is catchy and clever in of itself, it's not even the tip of the iceberg of his large and attractive body of work. With incredbile hand-lettering talent and an educated, experienced eye for clean design, his typographic works sing in any medium, whether it be poster prints, editorial covers, or even window blinds. I wan't able to find a link of prints that might be available, but his Malleable Grotesque typeface is up on MyFonts.

I came across Dave Whitley's gorgeous Lady Gaga poster (a collaboration with Kate Thomas aka Little Things Studio)_ after checking out the HOW Magazine poster contest winners, judged by a friend of the blog, Ty Mattson. Dave Whitley is a recent art school grad with a few notable features under his belt, including collaborations with definitely thinks and designs with beautiful custom typography and loves assembling together vibrant color palettes.

Being a personal fan of the music and art blog, For Young Moderns, I couldn't help but admire the gorgeous poster designs created for their posts, created masterfully by art director Jesse Codling. Working out of Seattle, he's a decorated and Addy-award-winning designer who is raising the bar for blog post art, with his designs surpassing the aesthetic quality of many gig posters and flyers floating around. His broad style range as a designer is evident from his clean, minimalistic vector designs to his more complex, layered, and vintage-inspired graphics. I look forward to FYM's new post art all the time, and it's truly inspiring to see an artist put out such a great amount of quality work consistently for a cool blog. Definitely check out the site, I personally have discovered more than a few favorite musicians and songs from their eclectic highlights.

These are available at the official TDC website, separately for $95 per autographed poster, or the full set of a dozen for $900. Alternatively, if you plan on submitting your work to the competition this year, you can get a poster for free if you submit five pieces.
